Eating Mindfully diet has been created by Dr. Susan Albers, who is a certified psychologist and eating disorder specialist. In this book, she gives tips to the dieters to deal with emotional factors that lead to overeating and help them in weight management. In the first step dieters are given tips on how to identify the reasons which leads them towards mindless eating. For this, the author recommends some Buddhist concepts and techniques related to one’s behavior. The program helps the dieters to listen to the messages that their body gives. Based on these messages, the dieters are asked to select healthy foods for their daily diet.  This, apart from keeping the dieters in good health by giving the body the nutrition it requires, will also make them feel emotionally strong and have a positive effect on their overall personality.

However, the author has given some guidelines to help the dieters in effective weight management and amend their eating behaviors. Among these guidelines, the foremost is to have at least three meals in one day. This must include breakfast. The author lays emphasis on having breakfast every day. Next, the dieters are asked to have a small snack every three hours. She recommends the dieters to include a small snack in between meals so that they do not go hungry for more than three hours. The dieters are also asked to avoid caffeine in their daily diet. They are also suggested to plans their meals much in advance. Further, the dieters are recommended to have warm food whenever they feel hungry. According to the author, warm food is more filling and thus the dieters should have warm food whenever they are hungry. Limited amount of snack food and appetizers should be had as there is a tendency in people to overeat them.

The author says that the dieters will experience lesser fluctuations in their blood sugar of they follow these guidelines. Blood sugar fluctuations also lead to cravings and emotional eating. Thus, the dieters will be able to control their food intake to a great extent if these guidelines are kept in mind.

The dieters at all points of time are encouraged to be conscious of their state of mind. They are advised to question themselves on why do they want to eat, if they are truly hungry or they are eating because of emotional reasons and stress. This is an important part of the entire program. The author states that understand your body is very important as it can help the dieters to check their eating behaviors. This will help them to establish healthy relationship with food as the dieters will ultimately eat the food that will provide adequate nourishment to their body.

There are no specific types of food that the dieters are asked to have. The dieters are only made aware about the signals that one’s body gives for the need of nourishment. The dieters are taught to identify these signals and include healthy food according to that. Eating Mindfully focuses on the awareness and consciousness of the dieters towards eating.

Even in exercises in Eating Mindfully the author recommends the dieters to pay attention to the messages coming from the body. Based on that, the dieters are asked to incorporate exercises in their daily regime. She mentions that it is important to stay physically active but the dieters are advised to be careful about the levels of being physically active in the stage that they are currently in.
